The 1876 Grand Ball is considered to be the "black
tie affair" of the era. Formal gowns, "marryin and buryin" suits and
ceremonial attire are suitable for the present day reenactment.

Women's
ball gowns consisted of fully gored skirts worn over horsehair or
crinoline petticoats. Bustles extending across the backside and over
the hips. The full hoop was completely out of style. Formal attire was
often cut low, off the shoulders, and heavily trimmed with contrasting
lace, bows, flowers, and over-skirts. |
